Muay Thai Clinching

While western boxing separates fighters in the clinch, Muay Thai does not. Clinch fighting is where many knee and elbow strikes are thrown. The stand-up grappling environment encourages striking and trapping your opponent to utilize offensive and defensive skills.

Variants of the Muay Thai clinch:

  • Arm clinch: Is when one or both hands control the inside of the opponent's arm(s) and where the second hand if free is in the front clinch position. Arm clinch is applied to quickly control the opponent before a knee strike or throw.

  • Side clinch: Is when one arm passes around the front of the opponent with the attacker's shoulder pressed into the defender's armpit. The side clinch allows the attacker to apply knee strikes to the defender's back and takedowns.

  • Low clinch: Is when both controlling arms pass under the opponent's arms Low clinch is typically utilized by the shorter of two opponents.

  • Swan-neck: Is when a single hand is around the rear of the neck is used to quickly clinch an opponent before a strike or kick.

Muay Thai Strategies and Techniques

1) Change Levels - Constantly adjust your target levels and work all areas of the opponent's body. Work your opponent defenses to create and crash gaps.

2) Take Advantage of Footwork, Angels, and Movement - Move laterally to create angels and gaps get the opponent offline, and create opportunities for you.

3) Expect to Get Hit- Spending time in such close quarters its inevitable your will take a hit. It's critical that are conditioned well enough threw training to be able to tolerate some shots.

4) Use movement to deceive and pretended - Test your opponent reaction and timing by tossing out some strikes. Collect data on your opponent's reaction. Use feints to drive them off balance.

5) Clinching Double Underhooks- When fighting taller opponents you will engage them more often on the inside. It's critical to develop a strong clinching skill set both offense and defense.

6) Find Your Range - Position yourself outside or inside your opponent's range… never in the middle!

Countering your opponent's attacks will demoralize their aggressive behavior and reduce the likelihood of going on offense.
